'We cannot allow our social care system to fall into further disrepair'

We believe in a national system of social care. People of all ages can be reliant on residential social care and as our loved ones get older, we cannot allow our social care system to fall into further disrepair.

These reports from the Scottish Trades Union Congress, revealed exclusively in The Herald, show the true extent of that disrepair. We have uncovered a system that traps workers in a cycle of endemic low pay, chronic understaffing and rising complaints. With The Herald, we shine a light into the precarious, exploitative and ultimately fractious state of social care in Scotland.

We see a system of care propped up by low-paid, overworked and burnt-out staff, the majority of whom are women, who have been taken for granted. It’s time their voices were heard.
