It seemed a highly unusual step for an established publishing house in Edinburgh recently to open a submissions window for romantic fiction with a strong Scottish connection. Manuscripts were sought from Scottish or Scotland-based authors, whether previously published or debut writers, with no limit on the number of submissions.

Historical, contemporary, near-future or fantasy romantic stories with a Scottish-inspired setting would be considered, as would stories featuring under-represented or marginalised groups. Indeed, the full gamut was sought: work to be deliberated over and pondered until finally honed down into a shortlist.

Romance-fiction writers across the country, many of whom are self-published and well acquainted with rejection letters, wondered what lay behind the open call — and whether it was worth the preparation and time required to send off their mini-bios, extracts and synopses. Advice was sought in whispers across writing groups and associations up and down the country.

Should I? Should we? Does anyone know anyone at Birlinn?

Pens were poised and intellects sharpened as submissions were prepared.
