Any reasonable person who cares about the welfare of Scotland’s avian community should welcome the prospect of restrictions on the activities of cats.

It’s been revealed that the Scottish Government is to review a report by the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission. The charity is seeking restrictions that would include curfews on these misanthropic, be-whiskered sociopaths. There is also a suggestion that they should be kept on a leash whenever they go outside.

John Swinney may have poured cold water on the idea of a crackdown, but as for me, I’d be thinking about extending current hate crime and incitement legislation to include cats.

It seems the Commission also has wider concerns about domestic cats imposing a reign of terror on more vulnerable and often deeply misunderstood species like rats and older men living on their own.

Obviously, no one wants to see anything extreme like a cull of our household cats, but at some point someone must step up and take responsibility for the trauma that the chooky-burdies and their allies suffer at the paws of cats.

The UK Government has already taken steps to curb the gangsterism and corruption which has long been associated with XL Bully Dogs. Yet, as anyone who has ever encountered cats in the raw will tell you, they’re capable of exerting a much more insidious and malevolent influence on those around them than the macho posturing of your common or garden Dobermann and mastiff types.

Before we do anything drastic though, I’d suggest a cautious approach to the issue of feline delinquency. In the first instance I think the Scottish........
