Time to think again about those red lines - and fast

It has been a fascinating week on the political front, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell, who highlights some straws in the wind highlighting a change in tone from Labour on Brexit.

However, there is a major barrier to progress.

It has from an economic perspective been a fascinating week or so on the political front.

Labour’s November 26 Budget has remained very much in the spotlight.

Given the degree to which the UK Government has tied itself in knots with fiscal rules far too similar to those of the Conservatives, it continues to look like a difficult Budget, for Labour of course but more importantly for hard-pressed households and for businesses. Amid this gloom, you must keep an eye out for hopeful signs and celebrate them or at least breathe a sigh of relief when you come across them.

And a flicker of light came from a perhaps unexpected source, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting.

Mr Streeting, speaking at the Cliveden Literary Festival on October 11, said the UK is facing an “enormous amount of jeopardy”. Not much cheer in that you might say, and you would surely........
