This Scottish airport just keeps on clocking up milestones with key flight wins

This Scottish airport has enjoyed success after success in recent times, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell.

And it is notching up milestone after milestone.

One key aspect of Prestwick Airport’s great success in recent times has been notching up an impressive number of scheduled cargo flights from and to China.

The airport has certainly realised its vision of winning e-commerce flights from China in short order.

It has been fascinating to follow this progress, especially having heard back in February last year on a cold, sunny day at Prestwick Airport what was planned on this front from head of cargo operations Nico Le Roux.

Mr Le Roux highlighted back then, when he took me on an airside tour, the potential for Prestwick Airport to boost revenues very significantly by attracting cargo flights bringing packages ordered by UK and Irish consumers on the likes of the Temu, SHEIN, and TikTok platforms.

And the airport has since then achieved success after success on this front.

In terms of inbound cargo, Prestwick Airport joined Royal Mail and EVRi in February this year in celebrating 25 million parcels passing through its Terminal E facility.

The airport hailed this as a “major milestone” in its expanding e-commerce operations. It observed then that it had by that stage handled more than 600 e-commerce cargo flights and in excess of 10,000 pallets and processed 23,000 tonnes of imports since the first scheduled e-commerce flight landed in May last year.

And the airport, which has been owned by the Scottish Government since it was rescued in 2013 with a £1 purchase from former owner Infratil of New Zealand, noted the growth in cargo services had created more than 250 direct jobs.

This success on the cargo front has been transformative, as Mr Le Roux signalled it would be in February last year when........
