Sneering at Oasis and their fans isn't cool or clever - your attitude stinks

Liam Gallagher may have the most famous sneer in rock and roll, but it’s as nothing compared to that directed at his band, Oasis, and their summer megashows at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

There’s the usual ‘why this thing millions of people love is rubbish, actually’ from the commentariat, of course, but also condescension in spades from everyone from the police to the local authority, with Edinburgh City Council describing the band’s fans as “rowdy”, “intoxicated” and “middle-aged men”. As Liam himself told the men and women of the council: “quite frankly, your attitude f***ing stinks.”

To listen to some of the talk surrounding the gigs one would think that Oasis fans are a mass zombie sleeper cell, ready to turn feral the second they hear the opening chords to ‘Rock N Roll Star’, transforming the genteel streets of Ormidale Terrace and Kingsburgh Road into a scene from 28 Years Later in the process.

You can see much of the same sneering in the differing approaches to rugby fans attending matches at the stadium and the treatment of football supporters. Rugby fans heading along to watch Scotland at Murrayfield are at liberty to indulge in a few cans of lager or a couple of glasses of wine on the bus up, and to enjoy further libations as they watch the match.........
