There is no option with Kanye West but to separate art from artist

Can you separate the art from the artist? Why this remains a discussion is a mystery.

Yes, you can. And yes, you should. Separate it all from the imperfect hands of its creator. Take from flawed humanity the creation from whence it came. Conflating artist into art in the age of hyper-information, of public and direct communication, is a fool's errand of heartbreak and naivety.

This topic reared its ugly head yet again when Kanye West dived into an extended Hitler-loving tirade, again. Every line he was looking to cross, he crossed it. This time, however, felt different, where even the most hardcore of supporters conceded that the excuses and defences for the formerly talented but now creatively washed rapper and producer had finally run out. The crash out is loud, stunning, and desperately sad.

But, as much as the art he makes reflects his ego, the separation between this person and what they have produced remains, still. The ethical and moral transgressions of West as a person cannot change the history that has taken place, the context in which it took place, or any former artistic glories. The “but he made Graduation” meme is so popular because it stands as the only feasible response to be reasonably mounted as some sort of defence for all this heinous behaviour.
