David Tennant - Ignore carping critics and carry on camping it up
What’s going on with David Tennant? Did he spend too long Time Lording across the universe - in the process turning his brain to space dust?
This week, the 14th Doctor Who again regenerated at the Baftas and during the evening the one-time Gallifreyan changed into three different outfits (slipping into Kylie territory here, only a little less leg revealing). And the former Bafta winner, Olivier-nominated actor, who soared with searing past performances of fascinating narcissists such as psychiatrist RD Laing, Hamlet and Macbeth, then told a series of jokes that wouldn’t have had tested Tommy Cooper.
Was it all well received? Even though Tennant was excellent when he appeared as himself (heightened) alongside Michael Sheen in lockdown series Staged!, when the actor revealed his authentic self to the world on Sunday, some critics became as angry as a Dalek with piles.
“The Baftas need more than David Tennant’s awful jokes to get people to care about them,” said one writer. And a television station demanded to know, “Who was responsible for the horrendous decision to bring back the detestable Tennant?” And one very famous glossy magazine headlined, “Tennant Suffers Awkward Blunder.”
Oof! You’d think he’d cut Ukraine out of the peace deal.
