BBC Scotland is already struggling. Could it be dragged down by wider crisis at Beeb?
What does the BBC crisis, which has seen the resignation of the director-general Tim Davie over journalism standards, mean for BBC Scotland? Herald arts writer Barry Didcock reports
With Celebrity Traitors judged a success by all and Strictly Come Dancing hitting its half-way point with minimal wobbles, the BBC panjandrums may have imagined they had credit enough banked to see them through to Christmas. Not so. The national broadcaster has once again found itself in the doo-doo – so much so that, as Celebrity Traitors contestant Joe Marler might phrase it, the Big Dog is now out of the game. That’s BBC Director-General Tim Davie, who resigned on Sunday. Following him out of the door was Deborah Turness, head of BBC News.
Their transgression? Complicated, but it involves injudicious editing of footage for a Panorama documentary about Donald Trump. Allegations of bias in the coverage of Israel’s war in Gaza and its illegal occupation of the West Bank. Claims that on transgender issues the BBC is very far from what you might call the JK Rowling school of thought. The BBC’s chief antagonist is The Telegraph, a publication now referred to by Private Eye as an ‘ex-newspaper’. Its weapon? A leaked memo by former journalist and sometime BBC advisor........
