Alan Simpson: Electrification of Scots rail network is just another empty promise LAST week was a momentous one for those of us who live along the busy commuter railway line between Glasgow and East Kilbride.
LAST week was a momentous one for those of us who live along the busy commuter railway line between Glasgow and East Kilbride.
Due to Friday's red weather warning, the last train for a full four months chugged along the line on Thursday as it is now closed for electrification work.
This will see all manner of things built along the route as part of a £140m improvement plan and comes as the Scottish government steams ahead with full decarbonisation of the rail network.
For those of us now forced to take the bus until May, at least we were cheered by thought of new, more frequent electric trains rattling along the route.
Except that we won't as electric trains are not due to enter service until December at the earliest.

Even after that, Scotrail have hinted that it may not be able to run every service with an electric train, which does beg the question - why bother electrifying it?
There are also questions being asked amongst rail users groups about whether there are enough electric trains in the fleet to run the East Kilbride line.
Scotrail currently has plans to replace the Inter-City fleet with an announcement due this year.
But there are no new electric trains on order and are unlikely to be any by the end of the decade.
Given the network seems to be fairly close to capacity it does........
