Signatures, What For?
HAVANA TIMES – The dictatorship’s new pantomime is the “My Signature for the Homeland” campaign, through which the population is urged to sign a document (which is already blank to begin with), and then it is presented as support from Cubans for the regime.
This is nothing new either, but in this particular context it draws attention, because there is a state of generalized alarm within the ruling elite, and for the first time they seem truly threatened with losing their privileges if the same thing that happened in Venezuela at the beginning of the year were to happen in Cuba, for example.
That is why, in some way, they have tried with this farce to make the world believe that our leaders enjoy popular support. But is this believable?
First of all, who are these signatures for? If they were for someone specific, there are only two names: Miguel Diaz-Canel or Donald Trump, and in a general sense, the international community would have to be listed as a third recipient. Let’s start from back to front.
Do they really think people are stupid? I don’t believe anyone on this planet thinks this was a spontaneous movement by the people in defense of their “Revolution.”
From the outset, the call comes from state workplaces, meaning we are already far removed from anything that could be called spontaneity. Then comes the summons, in which the only missing word is mandatory, because the insistence is obvious and the priority absolute.
At every workplace, even the main duties were sacrificed to make room for this two-hour or longer show in which the director gives a speech about the historic moment the country is living through, saying signing now means signing for peace, when in reality you are signing for the continuation of the same regime that has left Cuba in ruins for 60 years.
And it does not stop there. I know firsthand........
