Beyond the Yatra

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir stands at a critical juncture, one where the promise of a new beginning is increasingly overshadowed by the realities of a stalled present. Since the reorganisation of the state in 2019, the narrative has been dominated by high-voltage political symbolism, security narratives, and the eventual promise of restored statehood. However, beneath the surface of these grand political arcs, a quieter, more distressing reality is taking hold. The current administrative arrangement between the Lieutenant Governor and the political leadership is not working in harmony. This dissonance is not merely a bureaucratic friction; it is a governance crisis that is directly impacting the daily lives of the common citizen.

The primary casualty of this administrative discord is the delivery of basic amenities. In any functional democracy, the provision of water, electricity, healthcare, and infrastructure is the non-negotiable baseline of governance. Yet, in many parts of J&K, these fundamentals remain elusive. When the administrative machinery is preoccupied with political positioning or ceremonial functions, the gritty, unglamorous work of governance suffers. The people of J&K are not asking for grandiose declarations; they are asking for functional hospitals, reliable power supply, and roads that do not wash away with the first monsoon rain. The current disconnect suggests that the administrative focus has drifted away from these essentials, leaving a vacuum where development should be.

This vacuum is being filled by what can only be described as political show-off. There is a palpable sense that the current dispensation is more invested in curating an image of normalcy and progress than in delivering tangible outcomes. While photo opportunities and high-profile inaugurations make for good headlines, they do not fix leaking water pipes or staff understaffed primary health centers.
