Rains bring hope, but for J&K it is despair

Every time clouds gather over Jammu & Kashmir and rain turns heavy, an invisible tension runs through our lanes and markets. It is not just fear of getting flooded, it is fear of loss. Loss of our homes, loss of stock, loss of harvest, loss of sleep and much more. The Government’s own figures tell a story that many Kashmiris have been living for years: floods have become a recurring blow to our wealth, our health, and our peace of mind—and yet, funds and projects meant to protect us are also steadily increasing

As per official data from J&K’s Disaster Management Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Department year 2025 there were 152 deaths and 179 injuries caused due to floods, cloudbursts, landslides and massive rainfall. Behind every digit is a family that did not expect to say goodbye so suddenly. Very recently we lost around two dozen precious lives in Pir Panjal region of Jammu. In Poonch district alone a single family lost eight lives? There was massive disaster of property in Rajouri near Bela bus stand where three two dozen cars, buses and matadors were damaged? In year 2025, 3,316 houses were fully damaged due to landslides in rains, 1,862 were severely damaged, and 12,219 houses were damaged partially ? Around 3,602 cattle sheds were also damaged and we lost around 1515 sheep , goats and cattle as well. The 2025 further reveals that 77,915 hectares of agriculture land was also affected across Jammu and Kashmir 

Imagine these numbers as faces: a child watching muddy water eat into the walls of his room; a shopkeeper pulling up shutter after shutter, only to see a year’s worth of goods floating; a farmer staring at a field that should have been green and is now brown sludge.
