Universities are often judged by the quality of their teaching, research and innovation. Yet, sometimes the most meaningful reforms are not about laboratories, rankings or new academic programmes. They are about making students’ lives easier. One such reform is the introduction of dual-mode academic transcripts, a simple idea that has the potential to benefit thousands of students while reducing the workload of university administrations.Today, universities generally issue transcripts either in percentage format or in CGPA format. Some institutions provide a conversion formula or issue separate conversion certificates whenever students need to apply for jobs or higher studies. While these systems have served their purpose, they no longer fully meet the needs of students living in an increasingly connected academic world.

A student graduating from a university in Jammu and Kashmir may apply for a postgraduate programme in Europe, a scholarship in Australia, a job in the Gulf, or a competitive examination in India. Every institution has its own requirements. Some ask for percentage marks, while others insist on CGPA or GPA. As a result, students often find themselves running from one office to another, requesting conversion certificates, transcript clarifications or additional attestations.
