We need to know the immense importance of the Kangan to unveil the discrimination against its people.Kangan Sub-Division, nestled in the majestic lap of the Himalayas, is among the most beautiful yet remote regions of Kashmir. Home to numerous valleys, dense forests, breathtaking landscapes, streams and fresh springs, it is further enriched by the Nallah Sindh, which originates from the high glaciers of Sonamarg and flows through the entire hinterland. This natural splendour continues to attract tourists from across the world.
Strategically located in the countryside of Ganderbal District, Kangan serves as the only gateway connecting the rest of the country with the Union Territory of Ladakh and provides the shortest route to the famous Amarnath cave. Its mountainous terrain shares boundaries with Bandipora, Srinagar and Anantnag districts. At Zero Point near Zojila, it separates the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Internationally known destinations such as Sonamarg and Naranag, with their green meadows, alpine forests and lakes including Visan Sar and Kishan Sar, have earned the region a special place in Kashmir’s tourism map.
The sub-division is inhabited by multiple communities—Kashmiris, Gujjars, Pahadis, Dard-Sinas, Baltis, Pakhtoons, Kohistanis, and a small number of Kashmiri Pandit and Sikh families—who live together in harmony. Despite its rich cultural heritage and natural resources, Kangan remains economically and educationally backward. A large section of the population, particularly among the Gujjar, Pahadi and other tribal communities, continues to live below the poverty line.
