Big, Bold, Breaking Ground: Why Lilly, Amazon And Mastercard Headline Our New Most Innovative Companies List

The holidays arrive with snow, slush and in-laws, so you decide to head somewhere warm. You tell your agentic AI assistant everything you want from your Caribbean vacation: activity choices, restaurant types to consider, the lodging and flight options you want. It searches and then, just like that, books everything without you ever having to click Buy.

Midwinter heaven for you. Hell for your payment company's fraud detection team—which now must determine if these purchases were actually authorized or fraud perpetrated by some nefarious, margarita-thirsty identity thief.

"Historically, and currently for most commerce, the signal of intent for a consumer is tapping their card, clicking Buy on a website—[but] with agentic commerce, there is a delegation of authority," says Craig Vosburg, vice chairman of Mastercard. The company, he says, is positioning itself as "the operating system of economies,” through a cluster of new financial creations, which include: establishing a new stablecoin to instantly enable international transactions between different regions and currencies; creating "insight tokens" where you authorize an AI agent or a merchant to learn about your habits and preferences; and building B2B agentic payments for machines, with huge volumes of continuous business transactions.

These are just some of the major advances driving Mastercard to No. 10 on Forbes' brand-new list: America's Most Innovative Large Companies.

The very notion of “Innovative” is, of course, inherently subjective. But with this new list, Forbes relies solely on hard data that capture dozens of different indicators of sector-leading innovation no matter their industry or age.

The ranking is driven by Forbes’ new Innovation Index™, which measures innovation based on volume of patents and intellectual property, research focus, investor confidence, return on equity, media and social media sentiment, and evaluation of company news and statements by synthetic audiences (more on that later).
