Corporate bonds are thought to be among the steadier parts of a portfolio, but they may not be as protected as some investors think—especially from an AI pullback.

Big players like Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Meta are expected to spend about $5.3 trillion on AI infrastructure through 2030, Goldman Sachs predicts—and they're issuing billions in debt to help finance it. And it’s not just big tech: Utilities, for instance, are helping build AI infrastructure, making their bonds less protected from an AI downturn, according to asset manager DoubleLine Capital.

Still, the firm doesn’t suggest that you abandon investment-grade corporate bonds—just make sure you’re not inadvertently adding more AI exposure to the part of a portfolio that’s supposed to remain stable during turbulent times.
