(NOT SO) SIMPLE STUFF: When private tragedy is in the public eye
Sometimes, living in a small town and knowing everyone can be difficult.
The tragedy of the murder-suicide in Galen last week hit closer to home for me than for the journalists who came out from Rochester to cover it, or to the radio people who regurgitated the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office’s statements. The dispassionate objectivity that we as journalists are supposed to exhibit melted away when I saw the video reports put up by my television colleagues. I immediately recognized the house, which I drove past daily when I carted my kids to school. I remembered the yard sales, the kindness of the residents, and the meticulous care that the gentleman who lived there took with his property.
