DOING THE WRITE THING: Help wanted: Active statesmen

With New York State’s revised election calendar and Geneva City Council’s change to staggered election terms, here we are plunged into another election cycle with huge consequences. Several council seats and the Mayor are up for a vote again, so petitions to get onto the ballot will begin circulating faster than you can say “Happy New Year!”

Now that we have our tax bills in hand, we can see why the Democratic committee attempted to challenge the majority of people currently serving. The three elected Democrats (Councilors Whitfield, Brennan, and Lavin) have consistently tried to raise the difficult issues that are continuing to drive costs upward, only to be ignored by the Republicans (with the exception of Councilor Grimaldi, a former city employee who also has been sounding the warning bell).

The warnings in the comprehensive plan went unheeded. In Part 2, pages 19-25 contain clear projections of the tax levy and rate if Council refused to adopt the spending controls that were discussed in Part 1.
