I tried the new Fairphone, a phone designed to be repaired

After more than a decade, the ethical, repairable Fairphone is finally available in the U.S. I tested it out—and talked to the company’s CTO about the unique design.

When I unpacked a new Fairphone from its box, I noticed something that doesn’t come with any other phone: a screwdriver.

The tool is one small part of the company’s bigger effort to make a phone that users can actually repair—and that lasts as long as possible. If your screen breaks, you can easily unscrew the case and replace it yourself. Using the same screwdriver, you can take out a total of a dozen components, from the USB-C port to the camera modules.
