National Party Congress Sets New Development Goals For Vietnam – OpEd

The 14th National Party Congress concluded on Jan. 23, 2026, two days earlier than original Jan. 19 to 25 schedule. During the Congress, it unanimously re-elected the present General Secretary To Lam for another five years. The reappointment signals continuity of recent trends that prioritize centralized authority and the growing role of the security apparatus in political governance.

The Congress also elected 200 member Vietnamese Communist Party’s Central Committee and 19 member Politburo. 

The theme of the Congress was: “Under the glorious flag of the Party, uniting in strength and determination to successfully achieve national development goals by 2030; strategic self-reliance, self-strengthening and confidence, advancing strongly in the era of the nation’s rise, for peace, independence, democracy, prosperity, affluence, civilisation and happiness, steadfastly moving toward socialism.” 

The 14th National Congress powerfully awakens the resolve and intellect of the entire Party and the will of the whole nation.

It has set a political direction for the country for the next five years and reinforcing continuity at the top while tightening control within the Communist Party’s core institutions. 

Vietnam’s 14th National Party Congress was marked by a striking rhetorical emphasis on the Communist Party’s foundational slogan “dân là gốc,” which means “the people are the root.”
