Safeguarding The Malacca Straits Through Strategic Alignment – OpEd

Strong Indonesia-Singapore Alignment on Malacca Strait Security — Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the Strait open, safe, and secure under international law (UNCLOS), with joint efforts on anti-piracy, environmental protection, and cooperation with Malaysia and Thailand.

The Strait is Vital for Singapore’s Survival — As a global trading and financial hub, Singapore’s economy heavily depends on the uninterrupted flow of trade and energy through the Malacca Strait, making its security a core national interest.

Ongoing Challenges Require Enhanced Cooperation — Piracy, environmental risks, energy supply vulnerabilities, and coordination among littoral states remain key concerns. The two countries aim to address these through intelligence sharing, joint patrols, renewable energy cooperation, and diversified routes.

The strategic alignment between Indonesia and Singapore on the Malacca Straits issue is designed to safeguard economic interests and maintain a rules-based maritime order between the two countries. Leaders from both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to keep the vital waterway open, safe and secure. At the Leaders’ Retreat in Jakarta on 6 July 2026, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indonesian President Joko Widodo stated that they remain fully committed to keeping the Malacca Straits and ensuring that it remains open to all countries in line with the international law of the sea. The two leaders also reiterated their commitment to ensuring the security and safety of the maritime channel and to work together with Malaysia and Thailand to address Piracy and armed robbery in the region and to improve cooperation between relevant........
