Russian Universities Train African Students In Agrarian Specialties – OpEd

Significant African Student Enrollment: More than 2,400 African students (out of over 13,000 foreign students) are currently studying agricultural specialties at 33–44 Russian universities under the Ministry of Agriculture, with 53% on state scholarships; the top countries are Cameroon, Mali, Algeria, Morocco, and Chad.

Focus on Food Security Capacity Building: The training emphasizes modern agronomy, mechanization, and agro-technology to address Africa’s shortages of qualified personnel and technology, supporting broader Russia-Africa goals for food security ahead of the third Russia-Africa Summit.

Ghana’s Jospong Group Model: As a notable private-sector initiative, Ghana’s Jospong Group is sponsoring the training of 600 students over five years at RUDN University in agribusiness, waste management, and climate-related fields, with graduates expected to return and apply Russian technologies in Ghana.

More than 2,000 African students are studying in Russian agricultural universities in the Russian Federation, according to the latest statistics made available, during a media conference held ahead of the third Russia-Africa Summit, explicitly underscoring Moscow’s preparedness to continue ensuring aspects of the continent’s food security. At the media conference, devoted to deliberating pathways to support Africa’s agriculture, especially training African specialists in modern forms of agronomy, mechanisation and agro-technology, experts named top-5 African countries by number of students studying in Russian agricultural universities. These are Cameroon, Mali, Algeria, Morocco and Chad.

Statistics Showing Clarity and Training
