HAL is delivering the first three Indian-built HTT-40 basic trainers to the IAF after delays tied to late Honeywell TPE331-12B engines. The March 2023 order covers 70 aircraft worth ₹6,838 crore.
The tandem-seat turboprop is meant for first flying lessons: aerobatic, digital cockpit, Indian-fitted nav/comms, zero-zero ejection seats, and hot-refuelling so squadrons can fly more sorties in a day.
Compared with the imported Pilatus PC-7 Mk II, the HTT-40 is described as more powerful, over 60% Indian-content, and locally supported. Remaining aircraft and later engine production in India are meant to finish the fleet over about four to five years.
