India’s One Lakh Crore Race For New Airlifters – OpEd

India has issued a tender worth nearly one lakh crore rupees for 60 multi-role transport aircraft to replace the aging Russian An-32 fleet, which is becoming difficult to maintain and support. 

The main contenders are the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules (partnered with Tata), already familiar to the Indian Air Force, and the newer Embraer KC-390 Millennium (partnered with Mahindra), which offers deeper local manufacturing potential. 

Beyond the aircraft choice itself, the decision will shape long-term domestic industrial capacity, technology transfer, jobs and the creation of new aviation manufacturing ecosystems in India.

India is preparing for one of the biggest defence purchases in its history. The Defence Ministry has issued a tender worth nearly one lakh crore rupees for sixty multi-role transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The reason behind this big step is very simple to understand. Our Air Force still depends on the old Antonov An-32 planes brought from Russia many decades ago. These aircraft have served the nation faithfully, but machines also grow old. Engines tire, spare parts become hard to find, and safety worries increase. To keep soldiers, weapons, food and medicines moving across our vast country, new and modern planes are now needed.
