Exhibit: May 2023 AI-looking smoke near the Pentagon, posted as Bloomberg-style news, picked up by an Indian channel and a Kremlin-backed account. S&P dipped; Dow fell about 80 points; fire officials said no blast within minutes and markets snapped back. No one had checked first.

Short clips feel finished because they hide the hour before, the off-frame, and the cut. Algorithms pay for hold-and-outrage, not accuracy. Distrust of old media is earned, the piece says, and raw phone video has exposed real abuses—but a camera is not the whole event.

Credentials, blue checks, and view counts are not verification. The ask: wait a beat, ask who gains from that exact cut, and keep one question in front of every clip—what happened in the frame we didn’t see? Markets recovered in minutes; judgment may not.

Can’t you see it and know it?” I keep hearing versions of this question, and each time it lands a little harder, because it isn’t really about reels at all. It is about what we have quietly agreed counts as evidence now and how little that agreement has to do with whether something actually happened.

In May 2023, an image began circulating on Twitter showing black smoke billowing near the Pentagon. A verified account styled to look like a Bloomberg news feed posted it as breaking news. Within minutes it had been picked up by a major Indian news channel and shared by a Kremlin-backed outlet........
