The global electricity grid, largely built for the 20th-century centralized fossil-fuel era, is the critical bottleneck in the renewable energy transition, with thousands of gigawatts of clean projects stuck in interconnection queues due to insufficient transmission capacity.

This infrastructure crisis leads to wasted green energy (curtailment), inefficiencies, higher blackout risks, and a massive misallocation of capital — heavy subsidies for generation but chronic underinvestment in transmission and storage.

Solving the grid problem requires overhauling permitting processes, attracting private capital through innovative green finance, and deploying AI/smart grid technologies for real-time optimization, as energy security in the green era will ultimately depend on resilient transmission networks rather than generation alone.

Across the globe, the narrative of the energy transition is dominated by glittering solar parks and towering offshore wind turbines. Trillions of dollars are being mobilized to replace fossil fuels with renewable generation. Yet, while the world focuses on the “heart” of the green economy, generation, it is perilously ignoring its “veins.” The global electrical grid, largely built for the centralized, fossil-fuel era of the 20th century, is rapidly becoming the most critical bottleneck in the 21st-century energy transition.
