Tirah In Winter: Responsibility, Restraint, And The Politics Of Blame – OpEd

Winter in Tirah is unforgiving. Snow seals mountain passes. Temperatures fall below tolerance. Survival becomes a collective effort. In such moments, clarity matters. So does honesty. Yet, the debate surrounding Tirah this winter has been clouded by accusation, distortion, and deliberate omission.

On December 26, 2025, the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa issued a formal notification regarding the relocation of residents from parts of Tirah Valley. The decision did not emerge in isolation. It followed consultations with a 24-member Jirga representing tribal elders from the area. The process was documented. The administrative chain was visible. The authority was civilian. Still, when hardship followed, blame moved swiftly elsewhere. Security forces, tasked primarily with safeguarding borders and preventing terrorist spillover, became the convenient target. This narrative took hold despite the absence of any directive issued by them for civilian movement. It gained traction even as those same forces were deployed in snowbound valleys, assisting displaced families, clearing roads, and delivering relief. The facts deserve repetition.

The relocation took place during winter. That decision, administrative in nature, exposed families to extreme conditions. Snowfall intensified. Roads closed. Some families were stranded. Their suffering was real. It should never be minimized. But responsibility must be accurately assigned to those who ordered the evacuation. Despite the popular........
