Terror Trends: Khawarij Attacks On Police In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – OpEd
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been a frontline state of Pakistan in the war against terrorism, and the police are one of the most important units of national security. Police officers work in danger in the remote areas of the border to major cities to ensure law and order and prevent violent extremism in the community. However, over the last few years, Khawarij terrorists have stepped up an active anti-police officer campaign in an effort to undermine the frontline defenders of the state and disrupt the situation in the region.
However, irrespective of such unabated attacks, the police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have shown exceptional strength and bravery. The magnitude of their sacrifice gives the idea of how serious the threat they face is. There were 536 terrorist attacks on the police in 2025 alone, with 324 of them repelled, and 159 police officers were martyred in the line of duty. These statistics indicate the inability to eliminate the threat of terrorist groups and the unusual selflessness of the law enforcement agencies to protect the state and its people.
The trend of violence has continued in the present year. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police alone have so far encountered an approximate 28 Khawarij terrorist attacks with over 35 martyrs and 22 injured, and the true number is even greater because of several unspecified victims. The fact that these attacks were not accidental demonstrates a thought-out action aimed at attacking police officers, undermining the power of the state, and introducing an environment of panic and panic.
The recent events also reveal the cruelty and cold-bloodedness of this campaign. In Bannu, Constable Amjad and Constable Hazratullah were abducted by Afghan Khawarij terrorists who entered a mosque, where they were holding the Taraweeh prayers, and were later killed. This action portrayed an appalling disrespect towards the sanctity of the mosque, the holiness of Ramadan, not to mention human life. Four police men were killed and two others wounded in an Ababeel Force patrol in the Bajaur area of Khar, which shows that, despite the obvious dangers, police forces continue to work at the front-line. Equally, as in the case of Landi Kotal, where a Police Officer, Safeer Khan, and his son were shot and consequently died of their wounds, the attacks are gradually broadening their reach, extending to even areas where the police officers do not directly carry out their service responsibilities.
Such incidents show the real picture of the Khawarij campaign. An organization that kidnaps the worshippers of the mosques, harms the police officers who protect society, and generates violence during the religious events cannot have any moral or religious justification. Their policy is developed on fear, threat, and bloodshed. By attacking police officers, the Khawarij attempt to make the state weaker in terms of keeping law and order and, at the same time, intimidate the citizens.
Besides the physical attacks, the Khawarij have also tried to carry out a psychological campaign. They have threatened police officers either to quit their services, or they will keep on receiving violence. These dangers are aimed at demoralizing and creating the perception of power. Nevertheless, the fact that the police are still there and ready to do their business proves that these strategies have not been effective in destroying their determination.
The martyrdom of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police can be viewed as an important icon of national strength. Any martyr is a life devoted to defending the country against extremity and violence. Their bravery and dedication strengthen the message that terrorism will not be able to win over a strong state and a nation that is united.
At this sensitive time, the entire country has to be united in support of the police outfit. To honor the martyrs does not merely mean to remember, but a collective belief among people to follow on with their activities on the front lines. The terror caused by the Khawarij movement aims at crippling society by instilling fear and violence, but the resolute spirit of the police and other security institutions in Pakistan is proving that nothing will help it. The determination to fight and kill terrorism is decisive, and the sacrifices of the martyrs are to make the nation stronger towards achieving the long term peace and stability.
