Standing at 262 metres tall the 14MW Siemens Gamesa turbines has a rotor diameter of 236 metres - setting a UK offshore wind record.

It is the first in the UK to have 111 metre blades - longer than a Premier League football pitch.

ScottishPower and Masdar’s £4bn East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm will consist of 95 turbines - all made at Siemens Gamesa’s factory in Hull with a total of 285 blades - or three on each.

A single revolution of one turbine will produce enough electricity to power a UK home for more than four days, charge around 1,700 mobile phones, or brew nearly a thousand cups of tea, says ScottishPower.

The wind farm's energy will be sent to shore viable cables making landfall at Bawdsey, near Woodbridge.

ScottishPower Renewables chief executive Charlie Jordan described the erection of the first of the giant turbines as "a defining moment" and a UK industry first.

ScottishPower - which is owned by Spanish energy giant Iberdrola - celebrated the milestone with Abu Dhabi investment partner Masdar.

“East Anglia THREE will be the biggest and most powerful offshore wind farm in our portfolio," said Mr Jordan.

"It’s fantastic to see our vision come to life.”

The project involves billions of pounds being invested in UK and global supply chains, thousands of jobs during construction as well as more than 100 jobs created in the East of England, he said.

East Anglia THREE will be one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms when it comes into operation - generating electricity to power the equivalent of 1.3 million British homes.

Husain Al Meer, director of Global Offshore Wind at Masdar described the new turbine as "a milestone moment for the UK’s offshore wind sector".

"We see tremendous potential for offshore wind, not just in the UK but across the wider European market, where offshore wind can provide critical energy security, power economic progress and help nations achieve their clean energy objectives,” he said.

The blades used on the East Anglia THREE turbines are seven metres longer than the previous record of 108 metres – also made by Siemens Gamesa.

UK Head of Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa Darren Davidson said: “These are the biggest blades ever built for a project in UK waters – a real landmark for offshore wind.

"We’re proud that these record-breaking blades have been manufactured at our factory in Hull, where we now employ more than 1,400 people.”

The turbine has been installed using Danish company Cadeler’s O-class Wind Osprey jack-up vessel.

It will be joined later this month by the next generation P-class Wind Pace on its first deployment in European waters as the installation programme continues.

ScottishPower is currently building two new offshore wind farms off the Suffolk coast - the other being East Anglia TWO off Southwold.
