Norfolk Constabulary forced to tear up its trans policy

The force is expected to re-write the policy, which allowed trans-identified officers and staff to use toilet, shower and changing facilities "where they feel most comfortable", following the long-awaited publication of guidance from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

This makes clear that single-sex spaces - such as changing rooms and toilets - must be used on the basis of biological sex.

This means, for instance, that transwomen - biological men who identify as women - should not use female toilets or changing rooms.

The guidance, which follows last year's Supreme Court ruling that sex means biological sex, has left Norfolk Police's position legally untenable.

The new code, laid before Parliament on Thursday, establishes for the first time as statutory guidance that single-sex spaces can lawfully be restricted to biological women. 

That means Norfolk Constabulary's guarantee that trans staff could use facilities of their choice in "every and all force........
