The Broads Internal Drainage Board (IDB) in Norfolk plays a key role in preserving some of the UK’s most ecologically valuable lowlands.

A member board of the Water Management Alliance (WMA) and part of a coalition of seven IDBs, it is committed to flood risk management and environmental conservation across 709,000 hectares in the south east and Anglian regions.

The area it manages is both of national and international significance, attracting thousands of visitors and home to rare plant and animal species.

Judges were impressed with its main objective of rewetting peatlands to reduce emissions, and said that the IDB also “brings secondary impacts” in areas such as flood reduction.
