Folk 'outraged' after social club of 50 years slapped with eviction notice

Devastated neighbours have vowed to keep Spixworth Social Club - where they have enjoyed cheap drinks and live music for decades - open after it was given eight days to leave the site.

The club based in Crostwick Lane has roughly 600 members and has been at the centre of the community for 50 years.

But members say Spixworth Parish Council, the trustees, are "pushing" them out and have been trying to "take over" the site for the last year.

They are evicting the committee on May 30 after a row over its plans to increase the rent to £625 from £100.

Glen Rayner, 67, who has been a member of Spixworth Social Club for roughly 15 years, said: “It’s devastating.

“What the parish council is trying to do is all wrong.

“I feel angry at the trustees, let down.

“Eight days notice is outrageous.

“It has blown up on social media overnight.

“My wife used to volunteer behind the bar and we would bring both of our children here.

“The social club is meant for the community."
