Campaigners lose battle to save 200-year-old pub after house plans approved

Broadland District Council has approved a contested application to convert the former Ship Inn in South Walsham into a four-bedroom home.

The pub, which dates back to the 1700s, has been closed since the Covid lockdown of March 2020.

Locals had labelled the plans an "abomination" - but the Wellington Pub Company, which owns the premises and made the application, said the building was no longer financially viable as a pub.

They said the venue would require refurbishment of around £150,000, plus a further £65,000 to replace........
