Renewed fight to give butchers that served village for a century a new lease of life

Philip Dowe, who owns the former Chapmans site on The Green in Martham, was seeking permission to change the use of the former shop, which closed two and a half years ago, to residential.

Mr Dowe wanted the shop to become part of the adjoining house, historically known as The Walnuts, but in April, planners at Great Yarmouth Borough Council refused the plans, which they said clash with local planning policy.

Now Mr Dowe has challenged the decision and formally appealed the refusal to the Planning Inspectorate, an executive agency of the UK government that handles planning appeals, in the hope of having the ruling overturned.
