Ron Upton is said to have confronted one of Rupert Lowe's employees while he was up a ladder, demanding that the banners be taken down.

The angry scenes unfolded on Sunday morning near the boating pond as members of Mr Lowe's team were fixing the flags to the lampposts.

Mr Lowe, who was not present, posted on social media about the exchange.

He wrote: "Great Yarmouth Labour councillor Ron Upton was aggressive and rude to our team putting the England flags up on Gorleston seafront.

"Threatening to pull them down. All whilst wearing his own Palestine flag! Tells you everything you need to know..."

Mr Upton, who represents St Andrews ward on Great Yarmouth Borough Council, denied being aggressive or threatening and said he did not ask for the flags to be taken down, before declining to comment further.

Mr Lowe's team had been putting the flags back up after they had been removed by someone hours earlier.
