GARDENING: THE FLORIDA EFFECT
With its unique appearance and glossy lobed leaves, the Philodendron Florida is one of the most sought-after ornamental houseplants. A relatively recent cross of Philodendron squamiferum and Philodendron pedatum, the plant’s leaves can be solid green or have multiple colours in a single leaf, depending on the cultivar.
Commonly available cultivars include those with the suffixes Beauty, Bronze, Ghost and Green, referring primarily to the colour of their leaves and, in some cases, their patterns. Apart from the colour, it can be difficult to differentiate between varieties of Philodendron as they have overlapping characteristics.
The plant can be grown both indoors and outdoors, but doing so successfully requires adherence to a few basic gardening guidelines. Beyond location, how the plant is propagated also matters.
