Pakistan is celebrating another record year of remittances. Overseas Pakistanis sent home nearly US$ 38 billion during the last fiscal year, the highest annual inflow in the country’s history. At a time when merchandise exports remain around US$ 33 billion and the economy continues to face external financing pressures, these inflows have become an economic lifeline. They support millions of households, strengthen foreign exchange reserves and provide stability during difficult economic times.

There is every reason to celebrate this achievement. Overseas Pakistanis have consistently supported their families and the national economy, and their commitment deserves recognition.

Yet every record tells another story.

In 2025, more than 763,000 Pakistanis registered for overseas employment, according to the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment. Among them were engineers, doctors, IT professionals, teachers and other skilled workers whose expertise is increasingly sought around the world. Today, more than nine million Pakistanis live overseas, and many more aspire to join them.

Here lies Pakistan’s dilemma. Every dollar sent home is celebrated, yet every talented professional who leaves is seen as a loss. If both are true, perhaps we........
