The case of Sophia Smith, a baby who lost her life at a Glasgow hospital, must lead to answers.

A fatal accident inquiry into Sophia’s death in April 2017 in the city’s Royal Hospital for Children is finally under way. Born with Down’s syndrome, Sophia was just 11 days old when she died after being transferred from Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The baby girl had fought back and recovered from breathing and heart ­difficulties but later deteriorated after contracting a toxic form of MRSA while in the hospital. Tragically, as dad Matthew Smith revealed in evidence at the FAI yesterday, doctors told him she would have survived if not for the infection.
