I’m a married man aged 42 and my marriage is in crisis. My wife was 40 last year and this milestone birthday sent her on a path of self-discovery. She admitted all this stuff to me that I wish she’d kept to herself.

She had a rocky childhood, which I’ve always known about – her dad was an alcoholic, had several affairs and was in and out of her life, and her mum pretty much left her to raise herself and her younger sister.

So, my wife went into therapy to confront it all and then decided she had to be 100 per cent honest with everyone in her life, which involved admitting that she’d had an affair five years into our marriage.

She ended it when the man she was seeing started putting pressure on her to leave me.
