What We Learned From Trump’s Secret-Filled Time Interview

After Time ran a cover Donald Trump didn’t like in early February, the president claimed he thought the magazine had folded, despite being named its “Person of the Year” and sitting for a lengthy interview just eight weeks earlier.

“Is Time magazine still in business? I didn’t even know that,” Trump said.

Now, in honor of the 100th day of his second term, Trump has acknowledged his favorite magazine’s existence again. Earlier this week, he met with the magazine’s senior political correspondent Eric Cortellessa and editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs for an interview that was wide-ranging yet weirdly secretive. The president made a number of “big if true” revelations, from claiming he’s struck 200 trade deals to suggesting there are “loopholes” that would let him run for a third term. But he largely refused to get into specifics, except when he brought up his recent dementia screening. (“I took the cognitive test and I aced it 100 percent,” he bragged.) Here’s what we learned.

According to the president, he’s already fulfilled his campaign promise to bring down grocery prices:

… You promised that you would immediately bring down prices and usher in a golden age of America. The prices of gas and eggs have gone down, but the cost of other things remain —

The prices of groceries have gone down. The only price that hasn’t gone down is the price of energy. The cost of energy, I’m sorry, well, energy has gone down, excuse me. Let me change that — is the interest rates. And interest rates have essentially stayed the same. But almost every other thing …

According to actual facts compiled in a separate Time piece, that is not true:

Total food prices increased 3% in March, year over year, according to the federal Consumer Price Index. Grocery prices, specifically, rose 2.4% during that period and rose 0.5% since February. Eggs, meat, fish, and poultry saw the sharpest price increases over the last year, jumping 7.9%.

Since pausing most of his tariffs two weeks ago, Trump has made trade deals with all 195 countries in the world, plus five bonus trade deals:

Your trade adviser, Peter Navarro, says 90 deals in 90 days is possible. We’re now 13 days into the point from when you lifted the reciprocal, the discounted reciprocal tariffs. There’s zero deals so far. Why is that?

No, there’s many deals.

When are they going to be announced?

You have to understand, I’m dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We’re meeting with China. We’re doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I’ve made all the deals.

Not one has been announced yet. When are you going to announce them?

I’ve made 200 deals.

You’ve made 200 deals?

100%.

Time asked Trump which specific countries he’s struck trade deals with, and he gave a long, rambling answer about........
