Call to 'renationalise the energy industry' as Nissan boss says UK is 'uncompetitive'

A top Nissan executive has sounded the alarm over the UK's competitiveness in car manufacturing, noting that Britain is "not a competitive place to be building cars". Chronicle Live readers have been discussing the news in our comments section.

The remarks follow the automotive giant's decision to scale back at its Sunderland facility. During talks with MPs this Tuesday, Alan Johnson, who is Nissan's senior vice president for manufacturing, emphasised to the House of Commons' Business and Trade Committee that the Sunderland site incurs higher electricity costs than any of Nissan's global plants.

He said: "We are in a competition, you have to compete. It is becoming more and more evident to me that manufacturing vehicles in high volume in the UK is not competitive. It is not a competitive location to be building high volume production these days. It is energy costs, it is the cost of everything involved in the cost of labour, training.
