West Kootenay trails

(Part of an ongoing series about the best trails to explore, city by city, region by region, in Southern B.C.)

A 10-day e-biking holiday in the Arrow Lakes region was a blast-from-the-past as well as an opportunity to explore exciting new trails.

However, what made this mid-June series of seven rides truly special was Constant Companion Carmen's timing, coinciding with incredible displays of wildflowers. On every ride, her groups of up to 10 riders were greeted by walls and carpets of blooms in every imaginable colour.

The Arrow Lakes region is named for the 232-kilometre-long Arrow Lakes system, which includes Arrow Lake, the deep, clear Slocan Lake and meandering Slocan River. The region encompasses three valleys resting on either side of the Selkirk Mountains and connected by the Columbia and Kootenay rivers.

Rail trails run almost the entire length of the corridor between Nakusp and Crescent Valley beside lakes, rivers and through multiple communities.

Before revisiting some of her and the Bike Sheriff's favourite trails, she wanted to expand her mountain biking education with the challenging terrain at the Mt. Abriel recreation area located eight kilometres north of Nakusp.
