The Democrat Party is no longer a legitimate political party, and it hasn't been since at least Obama.
Since after the Civil War, or more accurately, the War Between the States, the Democrat Party has slowly evolved into a treasonous opposition. Their 'dreams' for the nation had departed from what the founders had in mind.
It was a war of secession
Understanding the events from the so-called Civil War onward is crucial.
It was not a civil war because the Southern states sought independence rather than control of the federal government. That is not a civil war. It was a war of secession. It is important to remember the South was almost completely Democrat while the North was anti-slavery Republican.
Lee's march to Gettysburg, PA was not an effort to take over the country. It was an attempt to dictate terms in Washington.
Whether the Democrat South had the right to secede is still talked about today, but only in casual conversation. Textbooks won't touch it.
The Constitution is a negative document. That is, it spells out what the government cannot do. The Constitution never delegated to the federal government the right to suppress secession. Constitutionally, that would remain a reserved right of the states or the people (10th Amendment). That is why President Buchanan (president before Lincoln) felt he had no choice but to bid the Southern states to 'go in peace.' Buchanan found himself in a difficult position. He thought secession was illegal AND, he felt, there was no right to coerce a state to stay.
The most intriguing argument in support of secession involves the states of New York, Virginia, and Rhode Island. It is little known that those states, in their clause for ratification of the Constitution,........
