Martin: Local case an example of scams targeting the elderly

Crimes against children, particularly sexual ones, strike at the heart of society because of the vulnerability of the victims.

Children normally have neither the physical nor mental capacity to fend off predatory behaviour by perverts seeking to take advantage of them.

And while kids are clearly the most vulnerable victims of criminal behaviour, the elderly are increasingly being victimized by their same lack of capacity to deal with predators attempting to take advantage of their weaknesses.

But crimes against those in their waning years of life tend to target the victims’ financial stability rather than their physical vulnerability.

The case of Calgary woman Alana Love Duncan amply illustrates that.
