The New York Times conducted a one-hour interview with that city’s 34-year-old Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who calls himself a Democratic Socialist — and who many of us would consider a radical left-winger.

His proposals for government-run supermarkets, free public transit and overhauling the tax system can only be thought of as “over the top” and reflect a young idealist with a lack of experience.

I listened to the interview with fascination, and discovered that Mamdani sounded rational and reasonable. Many of his ideas border on extreme socialism, but there is merit in listening to what he has to say and to learn why he has become the mayor of one of the world’s greatest and richest cities.
