Argentina on brink of recession despite growth in August, experts say

Economic activity surveys for August will likely deliver good and bad news for the government. The good news is that market analysts agree that the economy bounced back following the sharp drop in July.

The bad news is that they forecast that, even with this recovery, a recession could not be avoided. 

“Recession” is the technical term used when activity fails to grow for two consecutive quarters. Argentina fell 0.6% in the second quarter of 2026 and plummeted nearly 3% in the first month of the third quarter.

If private measurements are backed by official data set to be released in the coming days, that means the economy would have to grow close to 6% in September in order to avoid a recession, a task that appears difficult given the track record.
