In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, US President-elect Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar. The deal, finalized on January 15, includes the release of all hostages taken during Hamas’ incursion from Gaza on October 7, 2023. Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, stating, “We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly.”

According to multiple reports, the agreement entails a 42-day ceasefire between the two parties. In addition to the release of hostages, the deal involves a prisoner exchange, allowing Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody to return to Gaza. This agreement marks the first major de-escalation since the October 2023 attack, which left hundreds dead and triggered widespread violence.

The ceasefire was brokered with the involvement of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, alongside the Biden administration and Trump’s team. Qatari ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani reportedly played a central role, meeting with senior Hamas officials to convince them to accept the terms. Egyptian and Turkish intelligence chiefs also participated, working closely with Israeli officials, including the heads of Mossad and Shin Bet.

Trump’s involvement in the talks marks a significant step for the incoming administration. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, participated directly in the negotiations in Doha, where he played a pivotal role in securing Israel’s approval of the deal.........
