Unless the United States and its allies act swiftly and decisively, Bangladesh could soon resemble Iran after the 1979 revolution – or worse, descend into the kind of chaos and extremism that turned parts of the Middle East into breeding grounds for global terrorism. Washington, under the new leadership of President Donald Trump, cannot afford to ignore this unfolding catastrophe.

The recent statement by Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, during the IISS Manama Dialogue – signaling the Trump administration’s decision to abandon decades-old practices of regime change operations – has been widely welcomed worldwide. Yet, even as America pledges to refrain from such interventions, Bangladesh represents a unique case: a democratic nation hijacked by Islamist conspirators through a jihadist-backed coup.

Gabbard’s remarks, coupled with the appointment of S. Paul Kapur as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs on October 22, 2025, offer a glimmer of hope that Washington may finally recognize the urgency of rescuing Bangladesh from a devastating Islamist takeover.

Bangladesh’s current predicament is not just a domestic crisis; it is a regional and global security threat.
