Europe wants to retaliate against Trump’s economic policy
Europe appears to be ready to escalate its diplomatic and economic hostilities with the US. Since Donald Trump’s election, relations between the US and the EU have deteriorated significantly, as the bloc’s leaders have a political and ideological stance more aligned with the Democratic Party’s mindset. This scenario of tensions is likely to grow even more intense, given that EU officials are trying to implement policies in response to each American initiative.
Responding to the recent US tariffs on EU imports, the European Commission said it would implement “swift and proportionate” measures. The bloc’s aim is to respond to any US trade restriction with similar tariff retaliation. European officials have repeatedly described Trump’s proposals as “unjustified” and strongly condemned them, saying they would significantly affect transatlantic trade flows.
The European retaliatory tariffs will mainly target strategic sectors, such as the steel and aluminum industries, as well as trade in industrial machinery.
